The Quick Start Wizard

Quick Start is a guided wizard that takes an entire triangle group from raw data to a finalized IBNR estimate in a handful of steps. This walkthrough covers what it is and what each step does.

Quick Start is a guided wizard that walks you through finalizing IBNR reserves for an entire triangle group at once. Instead of visiting each analysis page individually, you move through a short, opinionated sequence of steps, and every change you make is applied across all of the triangles in the loaded folder.

It is designed for the common case: you have uploaded a group of triangles, and you want a defensible reserve estimate without hunting through every tab. Open it from the Quick Start page after loading a triangle group. If no group is loaded, the wizard will prompt you to select one from My Triangles first.

How it works#

The wizard is organized as a checklist of core steps plus a set of optional, deeper-dive steps. The core sequence is four steps that produce a complete estimate; the optional steps let you refine the numbers if you are not yet comfortable with the result.

A progress checklist on the side tracks which steps you have completed. Navigating away from a step, whether by clicking "Continue," using the navigation arrows, or selecting a row in the checklist, marks it complete. The active step is reflected in the URL, so a specific step can be bookmarked or shared.

Because Quick Start operates on the whole folder, an action like removing outliers or setting a margin fans out to every triangle in a single pass, rather than requiring you to repeat it per triangle.

The core steps#

Welcome

An overview of what the wizard will do and the deliverables you can produce at the end (a written report, a slide deck, or Excel exports). It confirms how many triangles the run will cover.

Step 1: Clean up unusual values

Some values stand out as much higher or lower than the rest and skew reserve estimates. This step scans each triangle for statistical outliers along development-lag diagonals and proposes replacing them. You can review every flagged value before anything changes, and a comparison table shows the dollar and percentage impact of the cleanup across the folder. For finer control, you can jump to the full triangle adjustments tool.

Step 2: Choose an averaging method

To project how claims will finish developing, the completion factor method averages the historical development factors. Different averaging methods (simple, medial, harmonic, geometric, and varying sample sizes) produce slightly different reserves. This step shows the IBNR each method would produce for every triangle in one comparison grid, highlights the selected method, and lets you apply a method across the folder or pick per triangle. It also surfaces the group-level reserve range between the lowest and highest selections.

Step 3: Review your reserves

A combined summary of the IBNR estimates across your triangles, with charts and tables for paid, IBNR, and ultimate amounts (in dollars or PMPM where membership is available). Review the results so far before finalizing.

Step 4: Confirm reserves

The decision point. If everything looks right, you are ready to create deliverables. If not, the wizard surfaces the optional refinement steps below so you can tighten the numbers before moving on.

Optional refinement steps#

If you are not yet comfortable with the reserves, Quick Start offers additional steps that live outside the main flow and do not count toward the core progress meter:

  • Adjust recent months - The most recent incurred months are not fully developed, so their chain-ladder estimates swing the most. This blends those low-completion months toward a projected trend, and toward the triangle's own seasonal pattern where there is enough history, for steadier reserves. It uses the account-level projection settings and can be reviewed in the full projection comparison.
  • Manual adjustments - Edit individual values that do not reflect expected experience, for triangles that need a hands-on correction the automated cleanup did not catch.
  • Add a margin - Apply a percentage cushion on top of your IBNR estimate for conservatism.

Producing deliverables#

Once you are comfortable with the reserves, the wizard points you to the outputs:

  • Generate a report - A polished, regulator-ready written report covering your full analysis. See the Report page.
  • Build a slide deck - Export key charts and tables as a PowerPoint presentation for stakeholders.
  • Export to Excel - Download your triangles and reserve exhibits as formula-driven Excel workbooks.
